PSA Pictures & Storyboard

You are going to create a Public Service Announcement “movie” out of one of the PSA’s written in class. Your goal is to find pictures that are interesting to look at that match up with your words and help your audience understand your words and appeal to your audience’s sense of pathos (emotion). If we have time, we can also include music.

Where do I get the pictures?

We may be publishing these movies on the News Journal and on the Internet. Therefore, we cannot use any material that is protected by copyright including photographs or music. It is illegal to do so!

To work around the copyright issue, you may either take photos with a digital camera, or find photos from the following sites:

If you think you’ve found another site for pictures that offers royalty-free, copyright-free images, check with me first before using it!

How Do I Save Pictures from Websites?

  • ·     When you find an image you like, right click on it, then click on Save Picture As… and save in a folder you’ve created on the desktop called:

[your last names] [section] PSA     (ex: Miller Bower Athens PSA)

PREPARE TO STORYBOARD: After finding your pictures, you will have to work on your script. Use your essay as the basis for your script, but realize that you may want or need to make some changes to fit the medium. Each of you will have to narrate your movie equally. Since the next step is to storyboard, you will to have figure out what changes you will want to make to your script before proceeding.

STORY BOARD – In each

big block, sketch the picture that

will be matching up with words.

Under, write the words.

Windows Movie Maker Instruction Sheet
Step 1
  Create the Folder
1 To avoid trouble, create a folder in your MY Documents that will hold all the images, music, and sounds for this project.
2 Create a folder called My Movie.  You can do this by going up to FILE, selecting NEW, and then FOLDER.
3 Go to the folder where you have stored your pictures and music (My Pictures, USB, Disc, my placement onto public, etc.)  Copy or move the pictures and music INTO the My Movie folder in your documents.

Step 2
  Movie Maker file
1 To open Movie Maker, click on the Start button in the lower left hand corner of the screen.  Then click on Programs.  You will see a listing for Windows Movie Maker.  Click on this and the program will open.
2 Before you even begin working on a project, click on File, Save Project As, and save a named copy of your movie into you’re My Movie folder.
3 Now you can begin to import your artifacts.

Step 3
  Importing Photos and Music.
1 In the Movie Tasks menu on the left side of the Movie Maker screen is a section called Capture Video.  The third item down on the list is Import Pictures.  Click on this icon.
2 An Import File dialogue box will open.  Go up the  address bar labeled Look in:.  Click on your name and go into your My Movie folder.  Highlight all the images you want in your movie and then click on the Import button.  All your pictures should then be added to the center box on the Movie Maker page.
3 Follow this same process for both music and videos you might want to enter into your movie, using the labels in the Capture Video list.

Step 4
  Artifact Placement
1 What images will help you send your message?  If there is something that doesn't fit, don't use it.  You don't need it in the film just because you brought it with you.  Otherwise it is like adding a bathrobe to a wedding dress.
2 Drag the pictures from the COLLECTION to the story board on the bottom of the MovieMaker screen in the order in which you want them to appear in the movie.  If you wish you can drag the picture before or after another to insert it within the movie..

Step 5
Titles, Credits, and Words in the movie.
1 If it is not already open, click on the arrow to open the EDIT MOVIE menu.
2 Click on makes titles or credit.  Read the choices and add words where you wish.
3 Type what you  want to see in the dialogue box.  You can edit colors and appearance by clicking on the links under the dialogue box.
4 Make sure that you give credit to the photos you have stolen, I mean borrowed, from the Internet!

Step 6
  Transitions: If you want them…
1 Under the EDIT MOVIE menu, click on VIEW VIDEO TRANSITIONS.  This opens the entire list of options.  As you move the mouse over the options, you can see what it looks like.
2 When you have found a transition you like, just drag it into the storyboard, placing it between the pictures.
3 Repeat this procedure until you have placed all the transitions you want.

Step 7
  Video Effects
1 Under the EDIT MOVIE menu, click on VIEW VIDEO EFFECTS.  This opens the entire list of options.
2 When you have found an effect you like, just drag it into the storyboard, placing it on top of the picture you would like to have an effect.
3 Repeat this procedure until you have placed all the effects you want.

Step 8
  Artifact Timing
1 To make the length of your images longer or shorter, click on the SHOW TIMELINE button just over the storyboard.  You can always change back to the storyboard view by clicking on this location again.
2 You will then see the "times" for each slide.  Click on the image and go to the right hand side until a red arrow appears.  Drag this arrow to the left to make the image appear for a shorter time period.  Drag the same arrow to the right to add time to the image.

Step 9
  Finishing (Rendering) Your Movie
1 When you have made all the adjustments to your film, you can finish it.
2 Go into the Finish Movie section of the Movie Tasks box.  Click on Save to my computer
3 In box #1 enter the name you want to use for the movie title.
4 In box #2, click on Browse and find your name and the My Movie folder.  Then click on Next. Then click on Next again in the new dialogue box.  Finally, click on Finish.
