Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah)
The sites below provide resources to help your students understand the large-scale atrocity of the Holocaust, including the people who were affected and involved. Since the subject matter is fundamentally disturbing, individual teachers must decide which material is appropriate for their students. To help you in that effort, we have listed high-quality sites that do not contain photos of violence or dead victims.
For guidelines for teaching about the Holocaust, plus links to additional related lesson plans, teacher guides, and information, see Holocaust Resources. We also have lesson plans for three outstanding books: Number the Stars (grades 3-8), Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl (grades 4-8), and Milkweed (grades 5-12).

The Miracle Rescue - Work in groups to research & share.
1. Look at the map of Europe (WIKI). Focus on Denmark, Sweden, Germany. Examine where Denmark is in relation to Germany & Sweden. Locate Copenhage, Capital of Denmark, which is the main setting in Number the Stars. How did Denmark's geographical location & features play a major role in the success of smuggling Danish Jews to Sweden?
2. Research to discover why Sweden remained neutral during WWII even though its neighboring countries had fallen victim to the Nazi War Machine.
3. The Danish Resistance movement was primarily organized by very young men & women. If you had been a teenager living in Denmark in 1943, would you have been one of the Resistance Fighters? What qualities would you need in order to participate in this colossal operation at such a high risk?
4. How do you think the successful rescue of Danish Jews helped to spark Resistance efforts in other parts of German-occupied Europe?
5. ID any current events or situations in the world today in which one group of people may be the target of oppression or injustice by its government. Are there any groups, similar to the Danish Resistance Fighters, who are striving to fight these injustices? Are these groups trying to fight this oppression using peaceful or violent tactics?
