Persuasive Devices - When a writer's purpose is to persuade, he or she presents evidence to convince readers to think or do something. Some types of evidence are more valid than others. Beware of persuasive devices such as bandwagon, loaded words, generalizations, testimonials.

 

Loaded Words - Words that appeal to reader's emotions

EX: "Act now before more innocent animals suffer needlessly."

 

Bandwagon - an attempt to persuade people to think, do, or buy something because a large number of people do

EX: "Everyone is using this toothbrush - why don't you?"

 

Testimonial - an endorsement by a well-known person

EX: "World Series players love this candy bar."
