Activities:

1. Tour Titanic. Choose 1 Artifact.  ID as much as possible about possible owner's life: Name, age, gender, family (Were they traveling with this person?), occupation, social status.  What was their purpose on the Titanic? (Business, Holiday/Vacation, Immigration). Did they survive?

2. Find the Titanic! Geography Activity - Locate & label places on map. Use interactive ATLAS on WIKI to trace Titanic's route. Mark Latitude & Longitude Lines.

http://www.discovernorthernireland.com/Titanic-Route-Map-A1514 - Titanic Route

3. Use WIKI Sites to make personal connections to passengers on Titanic.  Search for passengers with same last names, home state, age,

4. Your Are There! Extract facts from primary source accounts about Titanic. Compare to evidence gleaned from sites on WIKI.  Write your own "Eyewitness Account."   www.eyewitnesstohistory.com/titanic.htm (Use this site as a model).

5. Titanic Classy Letters - Examine social stratification in society. "Board" the Titanic using replica tickets from the White Star Line. Each Boarding Pass includes the name of an actual passenger.  "Walk" through recreations of several actual interiors of the Titanic.  View a 1st Class & 3rd Class Cabin.  Pay close attention to the stark differences between wealthy passengers & steerage/immigrants.  Track the experience of your passenger on their Boarding Pass as they move through the Exhibition.  Define "Class." Calculate what your passenger's ticket cost would be in today's economy.  (First Class Deluxe Parlour Suite  L65,500,  Second Class Ticket  L34,400,  Third Class Ticket Berth  L536).

http://www.discovery.com/guides/history/titanic/Titanic/titanic.html - Follow in a Titanic Passenger's Footsteps

5. Activity 5 Continued - Write a letter (using proper letter format) from the person you selected (on Boarding Pass)

and create an illustration of him/her in a cabin appropriate to their status.  Research the specific person on www.enclyclopedia-titanica.org or another site to incorporate additional details.  Address the following issues in your letter: 1.) To whom would your passenger write? Be sure to show feelings passenger has toward this person.

2.) Why is this person going to the United States?  What does this passenger expect to do upon arrival?  3.) What is the passenger's impression of life on the Titanic so far?  How do they feel about being onboard?  4.) Include a detail that gives a hint about the unforeseen disaster about to happen.  Does it seem unusually cold? Have there been rumors about warnings from other ships?  5.) What does this passenger do during the day of April 14?

6. Compare today's culture to that of 1912.  Complete Graphic Organizer. Column 1 (Mine) is your (student's) favorite, or what would be normal for your family.  Column 2 will be completed while visiting the Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition.  Remainder of the assignment will be completed after the tour.  Use sites on WIKI to explore.

7. Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous - The Passenger's Manifest reads like a "Who's Who" of high society in 1912.  Reportedly the combined personal fortunes of some of the elite passengers was more than L150 Million (British Pounds).  Use www.encyclopedia-titanica.org.  Indicate whether or not passengers listed on your Graphic Organizer are included in any of the displays.  If so, how?  (Claim to Fame - What are they famous for? Did they survive the sinking? Are they in the Exhibition?)  John Jacob Astor, Madeleine Astor, Margaret "Molly" Brown, Lucy Christiana, Lady Duff Gordon, Jacues Futrelle, Dorothy Gibson, Benjamin Guggenheim, Henry B. Harris, Francis David Millet, Harry Molsen, Isidor & Ida Straus, Charles Eugene Williams, Richard Harris Williams II ).

8.  Work in groups to research what kinds of sports or other athletic activities were popular in 1912, and available on the Titanic.  Presentation will be in the format of a Sports News Show.  "Tonight on the First Class Promenade Deck we begin our Sports Coverage Live, by interviewing a rising tennis ace. Plus, we'll talk strategy with Titanic's resident squash pro and find out which is more popular, the Gymnasium's mechanical horse or its camel!"  Research! Watch a Sports Broadcast for reference. Include Gymnasium, Turkish Baths, Swimming Pool, & Squash Courts.

9. They're Playing Our Song - Research the elaborate art work on the covers of old sheet music as primary sources. Listen to "Alexander's Ragtime Band" , "Meloncholy Baby" in class. Search www.answers.com Music 1912.  Is the story that the Band played while the Titanic sank true?  Music was prevalent in 1912, and sheet music was among the paper artifacts recovered from the site (Kiss Me, My Honey, Kiss Me - Irving Berlin & Ted Snyder). The White Star Line hired 8 muscians to entertian the First & Second Class Passengers.  Lunch & Dinner were introduced by the playing of a song, "The Roast Beef of Old England."  Smithsonian Museum

10. Listen to Harry Reasoner's News Report on the Sinking of the Edmund Fitgerald.  Compare & Contrast the 2 tragedies. Listen to the Gordon Lightfoot song memorializing the men of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgl8bta-7aw

Write your own song about the sinking of the Titanic. Create a sheet music cover depicting some aspect of the Titanic.

11.  Titanic had its own newspaper published daily aboard ship, The Daily Atlanic Bulletin.  Working in groups, produce your own Titanic newspaper.  Articles will include what children did for fun on ship, biographies of the Titanic's crew, biographies of some of the famous passengers, connections to your community (try to find at least one  -  any New Jersey passengers?), & anything else appropriate for a newspaper in 1912. Include illustrations & advertisements appropriate for 1912.  Go back and review your research from this unit for ideas.

12.  Treachery on the Titanic!  Solve the Mystery

http://www.historyonthenet.com/Titanictreasure/treachery_on_the_titanic_intro.htm - Interactive Mystery

  • Tracking the Titanic

    • Using a map of the Atlantic Ocean that shows both the United States and England, mark the port where the Titanic began its journey. The Titanic originally left Southhampton, England, stopped in Cherbourg, France and again in Queenstown, Ireland to bring passengers on board. The final destination of the Titanic was New York City. The Titanic sank 1,000 miles east of Boston and 375 miles southeast of St. John's, Newfoundland. This is an interactive project that allows students to see the path of the Titanic in a visual way.

  • Unsinkable Boat

    • The Titanic was originally called an unsinkable ship. Brainstorm ideas on what would actually make a boat unsinkable, and have students create drawings of this ship. Create a detailed plan of the materials that would be used in the construction, how many people the ship would hold, how flexible its metal would be and how far it would be able to tip before sinking. Ask the students to come up with a plan for testing whether a ship would sink or not.

  • Mock Trial

    • Involve an entire class in a mock trial relating to the sinking of the Titanic. Go over the history of the Titanic and the people that were thought to be responsible for the sinking, such as White Star Lines. One group would be the defense for White Star Lines and talk about why they were not responsible for the sinking and deaths of many passengers. The prosecuting team would present evidence why White Star Lines were to blame for the sinking. Another section of the class can be members of the jury to determine the ultimate guilt.

  • Timeline

    • Use a large sheet of construction paper placed on a wall in a classroom to be a large Titanic timeline of events. Students can help mark the dates of important events, such as the first ship built by White Star Lines, the design of the Titanic, building of the Titanic, other ships built by White Star Lines going on voyages and the sinking of the Titanic. Students can do research on events to come up with as much detail as they would like, as well as drawing pictures to go along with the events.
