Chapter Summaries

Chapter 1-      Bella(Arabella) talks about her life in the theater. She says her mom loves the theater and that Bella should be on stage. Bella's mom dies, and her dad takes her to her grandmom to live.

Chapter 2- The war has not yet started, and Wilkes peers out his window to see a militia or soldiers. The soldiers where waiting to board the train to guard the hanging of John Brown. For John brown has done a foolish thing in trying to free the slaves, and now John Wilkes Booth decides to join the Army on their journey to hang Booth. Wilkes pays a soldier for a uniform, and marches on with the rest of the soldiers.

chapter 3- Wilkes wants to be in the South Army because he thinks slavery is right, and that’s why he doesn’t like President Lincoln at all who believes that slavery is wrong.  Wilkes wants power that’s why joining the Southern Army will make him feel powerful and worth something. He used to be an actor so that he would be noticed, and could achieve his dream of being famous, and having fortune. Joining the Southern Army gave him a chance to do even more and pursue his dreams. Wilkes was very fortunate for being given all those opportunities to do great things in life that other people would have been more thankful for.

Chapter 4- Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States. The South no longer wants to stay in the union, there will be a war.  Wilkes thinks about how he was not happy on the farm and how he moved on to better things. Asia’s husband likes Lincoln but John Wilkes hates his view of politics. Wilkes tries to choke John Clark ( Asia’s Husband) at dinner one night, he says his mind isn’t right after the capturing of John Brown which Wilkes clearly lied about

Chapter 5- Bella is sad about how Mr. Buchanan isn’t president anymore, she already has it in her mind that she doesn’t like Abraham Lincoln. At the inauguration her mind has changed about Abraham Lincoln when he spoke his speech. Bella now likes Abraham Lincoln, and his family, well except for Mrs. Lincoln and her mood swings. The war has started because states have seceded from the union. Bella doesn’t know how to feel about the south and her home state anymore.

Chapter 6- The war has finally begun, no turning back. Wilkes has developed a tumor on the side of his neck which he needed to get cut off and removed which left a mean scar. When women asked what had happened, he would lie and say he was wounded in battle; although that was not true. In this chapter Wilkes meets the love of his life, Lucy Hale, who was a supporter of the Union. He believes that he coud easily win over her heart.

Chapter 7-  Steven is going away to school, Bella is dreading the day. There are plenty of soldiers in the train station, and Steven is thrilled  with the chance to talk to them all. Bella goes to the While House without Steven for sewing lessons, she meets a new friend, Willie. Bellas sewing lessons are going very well, and her friendship with Willie is growing. Willie develops a fever, Abraham Licoln loves him with all his heart, but he sadly dies.

Chapter 8- Wilkes is confused because he does not understand Lucy. Lucy is like no other women he has met before; she doesn't fall for him. Wilkes is going crazy because he doesn't know wether she likes him or not. Wilkes asks Lucy to marry him because he loves her so much. She says that she is going away for 1 year and if in that time he does not cheat, she will be back to marry him.

Chapter 9- Finally the winter after Willies death has passed. Bella continues to write letters to Steven about the war. The President has signed the Emancipation Proclamation which states that all States that don't already have slaves can't buy slaves or start slavery in their state. The proclamation freed no slaves where some people still owned them.

Chapter 10-Wilkes believes that his mind is sharp, sharper then the minds of the ones who follow behind Lincoln. He makes the plan to kidnap Lincoln in this chapter, and believes it will work very wellconsidering Bella works at the White House. Willie dies of a horrible fever, and it is almost too much for Lincoln to take.

Chapter 11- Everyone's wondering how long Mr. Lincoln can live with such agony of the death of his favorite son. Bella continues to wonder about her father in prison. Even if she does get him out, he would still join the army and fight for what he thought was right, so she knows trying to get him out of prison is useless. Wilkes convinces Bella to go through with the plan of kidnapping Lincoln.

Chapter 12- In this chapter, Wilkes puts his thoughts into plan and gets bella to fake her mother being sick to put the plan into further play. The president ends up going to Richmond but comes back and ends up going to the Surrat house. Bella plays her part and feels the guilt, but what keeps her staying with such a filthy man is his looks, and his plan to free the prisoners. Wilkes shouts at Bella and lets her know what he has really been feeling, and he's not really doing this to free the soldiers kept hostage, he's doing this out of his hate for Lincoln. Wilkes puts a gun to Bellas head, and twists her arm back, making her screach of pain, she has fallen under his spell of drop dead good looks.

Chapter 13- Bella goes to the Surratt house as told, there was no backing out. She had fallen under the spell of such a man. She was so horrified of herself, and disappointed as she had fallen under such a spell in helping kidnap such a helpless man.

Chapter 14-  Wilkes drilled holes at the top for her to breathe. He had to wish to kill or hurt her.Wilkes took off with a broken foot, to wear him and his assistant criminal hid in a barn. The Police found them in the barn and lit it on fire. Wilkes did not surrender but his partner did. Wilkes would die before he gave himself up. Wilkes was shot in the neck, and that was when he left the barn, where the stage curtains closed, and he died.

Chapter 15- Arabella found the scissors in her pocket and let herself free before she died of no air. Bella and Steven made up, and Bella felt that she had to confess, confess to someone her sin! Steven went with her and together she was free of her wrong doing. She wasn't put in jail, killed, nothing. They thought she had been through enough of John Wilkes Booth punishment. She worked at another Theatre making dressed  because Fords Theatre was shut down for a while. And that's the assassination of Mr. Abraham Lincoln.
