Mrs. Rooney’s Literacy Class

Welcome to our Literacy Class! I’m very excited to work with you this year!  My goal is to help you continue to grow as readers and writers.

It is essential to arrive to class on time, whether in the building or in our Virtual Classroom.  Please come prepared with a fully charged Chromebook, charger, writing utensil, and earbuds if you choose to use them.

Please keep your camera on and your microphone muted. Please remain in class until dismissed.  Raise your hand to speak, and treat members of the class with respect, especially when responding to classmates’ ideas. Ask questions when you don’t understand the material so I can help you.

Reading

The 7th Grade Reading Program is based on the Curriculum Standards. We will cover all aspects of a strong literacy program – fiction, nonfiction, guided reading, independent reading, vocabulary, spelling, along with many additional strategies and skills.

Writing

We will be using the Heinemann Writing Program to focus on many aspects of writing this year:  Narratives, Argument, Persuasive, Information/Explanatory, and Research Writing Skills.

Vocabulary/Spelling

Much of our focus will be on Greek and Latin Roots.  Words will also come from our novels and short stories, nonfiction reading.

Homework

Homework will be assigned, and students are encouraged to write assignments in their agenda, and check our class Wiki Homework Page (http://mrsrooney.pbworks.com), and Google Classroom.  Checking the agenda, WIKI, Google Classroom, and Power Parent (Passwords available at the Main Office) are excellent ways to monitor your  assignments and  progress throughout the year.
