Poetry vs Prose
http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/p-as_docs/PoetryandProse.pdf - Poetry vs. Prose - What's the Difference?
http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/interactives/venn/ - Compare Poetry to Prose - Venn Diagram
Poetry noun
- the art of rhythmical composition, written or spoken, for exciting pleasure by beautiful, imaginative, or elevated thoughts.
- literary work in metrical form; verse.
Poetry is language spoken or written according to some pattern of recurrence that emphasises relationships between words on the basis of sound as well as meaning. This pattern is almost always a rhythm or metre (regular pattern of sound units). This pattern may be supplemented by ornamentation such as rhyme or alliteration or both.
Prose
noun
- the ordinary form of spoken or written language, without metrical structure, as distinguished from poetry or verse.
- matter-of-fact, commonplace, or dull expression, quality, discourse, etc.
Prose is the form of written language that is not organised according to formal patterns of verse. It may have some sort of rhythm and some devices of repetition and balance, but these are not governed by regularly sustained formal arrangement. The significant unit is the sentence, not the line. Hence it is represented without line breaks in writing.
Example of Prose and Poetry Versions
Prose version:
A woman stands on a mountain top with the cold seeping into her body. She looks on the valley below as the wind whips around her. She cannot leave to go to the peaceful beauty below.
In the valley, the sun shines from behind the clouds causing flowers to bloom. A breeze sends quivers through the leaves of trees. The water gurgles in a brook. All the woman can do is cry.
Poetry version
The Woman on the Peak
The woman stands upon the barren peak,
Gazing down on the world beneath.
The lonely chill seeps from the ground
Into her feet, spreading, upward bound.
The angry wind whistles ‘round her head,
Whipping her hair into streaming snakes,
While she watches, wishes, weakly wails.
Beyond the mountain, sunshine peeks,
Teasing flowers to survive and thrive.
The breeze whispers through the leaves,
Causing gentle quivers to sway the trees.
Laughter gurgles as the splashing brook
Playfully tumbles over rugged rocks,
While the woman above can only grieve.

Poetry Reading Strategies
Preview
the poem by reading the title and paying attention to the poem’s form: shape on the page, stanzas, number of lines and ending punctuation.
Read poem aloud several times
to hear rhyme, rhythm, and the overall sound of the poem. This makes it easier to understand the poem.
Visualize the images
by paying close attention to strong verbs, and comparisons in poem. Do the images remind you of anything? Let the comparisons paint a picture in your head.
Clarify words and phrases
by allowing yourself to find the meaning of words or phrases that stand out, are repeated, or you do not understand the meaning. Use dictionary, context clues, teacher or peer.
Evaluate the poem’s theme
by asking what message is the poet trying to send or help you understand? Does it relate to your life in any way?
