Informational texts:
nonfiction that gives information about the world rather than only telling a story
Text evidence:
details from a story or article that kids use to support their ideas. The Common Core wants LOTS of text evidence.
Close reading:
the careful line-by-line study of an article or story to help students really "get it."
Complex text:
What makes a story or article complex? Hard words, a tricky structure, and a subject that is new or exotic to the reader. Lexile and Guided Reading levels are just one way to measure complexity.
Higher-level thinking:
thinking that requires kids to, well, THINK instead of just recall facts.
