Examples of Compound Complex Sentences:

In these examples, the dependent, or subordinate, clause is underlined.

2. I will get to watch television, but first, I have to clean up the dishes after we finish eating.

3. We won the game, but my uniform was muddy because it rained the entire time.

4. After our trip to the beach, school started back, and I was excited to see my friends.

Predicate Nominatives

predicate nominative - a noun or pronoun which follows the verb and describes or renames the subject. It is another way of naming the subject. It follows a linking verb.

In the following examples, the predicate nominative is bold and the subject is underlined.

The subject and the predicate nominative are essentially the same thing.

EMBARRASSMENT restates the subject FANS.

Look for the subject, decide whether the verb indicates a state of being and find out what “state” the subject is in.

Once you identify the verb, ask whether the verb was done to someone or something. For example: Did THEY do something? No, they just were. What they WERE is FAVORITES, making FAVORITES the predicate nominative.

https://www.quia.com/rr/805155.html - Predicate Nominative - Rags to Riches

What is the difference between a predicate nominative and a predicate adjective?

Adjective complements are also called predicate adjectives; noun complements are also called predicate nouns or predicate nominatives. See predicates, above. An object complement follows and modifies or refers to a direct object. It can be a noun or adjective or any word acting as a noun or adjective.

Transitive & Intransitive Verbs

What Are Transitive Verbs? (with Examples)

A transitive verb is a verb that can take a direct object. In other words, it is done to someone or something. Most verbs are transitive.

A transitive verb contrasts with an intransitive verb. An intransitive verb cannot have a direct object.

Here is an example of a transitive verb:

Read (from to read) is a transitive verb. In this example, the direct object is a book. To read is transitive because you can read something. You can read a poem, a story, a face, a horoscope, etc.)

Here is an example of an intransitive verb:

(Snores (from to snore) is an intransitive verb. It has no direct object. You cannot snore something.)

A verb can be classified as transitive or intransitive according to whether it takes or doesn't take an object:

Examples of Transitive Verbs

Here are some more examples of transitive verbs. Remember, to prove they are transitive, find the verb (shaded) and then ask "what?" or "whom?" to find the direct object (in bold).

Transitive verbs are very common. They even appear inside the direct objects of other transitive verbs. Look at these examples:

Examples of Verbs Which Are Transitive and Intransitive

Some verbs can be transitive and intransitive. For example:

(To walk is transitive.)

Direct object

A direct object answers the question "what?" or "whom?"

Examples:

Indirect Object

An indirect object answers the question "to whom?", "for whom?", "for what?"...

An indirect object is the recipient of the direct object, or an otherwise affected participant in the event. There must be a direct object for an indirect object to be placed in a sentence. In other words an indirect object cannot exist without a direct object.

Examples:

Finding the Direct Object

Remember, to find a direct object of a transitive verb, first find the verb and then ask "what?" (or "whom?").
(Note: If this question seems nonsensical, then you're probably dealing with an intransitive verb.)

In each example below, the transitive verb is shaded and direct object is in bold.

pies. To love is a transitive verb. It has a direct object.)

(Q: Eats what? A: cakes)
(The direct object is cakes. To eat is a transitive verb. It has a direct object.)

Direct objects aren't usually single words. They are usually noun phrases. For example:

midnight is not tangible, but it is a perfectly good direct object for the verb to strike.)

Compare the examples above to this intransitive verb:

something. Arrive is an intransitive verb. It can't take a direct object.)
